Industrial Tour (2): Rhythm & Hues Studios

Overview

UKC is offering an exciting tour to the Rhythm & Hues Studios, a visual effects studio serving the major film studios. With some of the world’s top creative talents and best technologies, Rhythm & Hues delivers outstanding, award-winning visual effects and animation. During the tour, you can meet digital artists, come by their studios, and find out how the digital effects and animations are made.

Rhythm & Hues’ headquarters are located on the Westside of Los Angeles, two miles south of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), in the City of El Segundo. The El Segundo campus provides 200,000 square feet of creative space for 750 digital artists and staff. Features include two state-of-the art screening rooms equipped with Christie 2K digital projectors, (one with stereoscopic 3D capability), a 4000 sq. ft. machine room, numerous editorial and video conference rooms, as well as a cafeteria and other amenities.

Recognized as one of the top facilities of its kind in the world, Rhythm & Hues has contributed to more than 150 feature films. The studio received its first Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1996 for its work on Babe and its second Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2008 for The Golden Compass. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Academy Award for Visual Effects in 2006 for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. R&H also worked on Happy Feet which won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Animated Film. The studio is the recipient of four Scientific and Technical Academy Awards for the development of its proprietary film scanner (1994), the Wavefront Advanced Visualizer (1998), the fluid dynamics simulation software system (2008), and the render farm queue manager (2010).

  • Transportation: provided by UKC 2012
  • Cost: Free
  • Eligibility: All UKC participants who registered for UKC 2012
  • Maximum number of the tourists: limited to 20 (First-come-first-serve)
