CAC-1 Civil Infrastructure System
Chair: Dr.
Hosin David Lee, Univ. of
Iowa, hlee@engineering.uiowa.edu, 319-384-0831
|
 |
|
This session will focus on management of civil infrastructure. Recently, Government Accounting Standard Board (GASB) issued a new statement 34, which requires all governments to calculate the value of their current infrastructure. There are different methods to calculate the value of
infrastructure assets including the depreciation and the historical cost. Governments can show their infrastructure to maintain their values after investing more money for maintenance. Different maintenance methods including environmentally friendly recycling method will be considered to maintain the infrastructure in the best condition at lowest cost. The session will include papers on the following topics: 1) Understanding GASB 34 statement and its implication for governments, 2) Development of infrastructure asset management system, 3) Design of cost-effective infrastructure recycling method, and 4) statement similar to GASB 34 for Korean governments?, and 5) Briefing on Next TEA-21 legislation. Given the renewed interests in civil infrastructure management and security, this session will be broadly appealing to KSEA participants.

FST-1 Molecular structure-function technologies and the future of
functional foods
Chair:Dr. Young-Zoon Lee, Director
Biofoods, SMBI, yzl@smbimilk.com
Tel: 513-247-3624Fax: 513-489-7267
The demand for functional food products has blossomed in recent years. The functional
food market is rapidly growing at a rate of 15-20% per year. Functional foods refer to
foods that contain some health-promoting component(s) beyond traditional nutrients.
Components of the functionalfoods, such as macronutrients, micronutrients
and antinutrients, have shown to modify metabolic and cellular functions by altering
receptors, enzymes and gene expressions. By altering the cellular functions, functional
foods may also alter the disease initiation, development, and/or progression. The interactions
of many of these nutrients with cellular machinery remain much of a mystery. However,
the newly emerging technologies are now unraveling the mysteries that are central to understanding
how functional foods function. This session will feature the state-of-art technologies such
as genomics, proteomics, signal transduction and other molecular structure-function
research tools and illustrate how they can contribute to the studies of functional foods to
benefit overall health and well being of humans.
