The US-Korea Conference (UKC) is a conference that facilitates US-Korea cooperation on recent developments in science, engineering, technology, industry, and entrepreneurship. This year, UKC is hosting its 3rd Innovation and Entrepreneurship Symposium (IES) from December 15 – 18, 2021 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County, Garden Grove, CA. The symposium seeks to provide a cooperative environment for current and future aspiring entrepreneurs in the US and Korea to network with high-profile entrepreneurs and investors, listen to the stories of those who have successfully exited their companies, and learn about the best practices of startups, from protecting your intellectual property and assets to securing funding from venture capitalists and government agencies. For budding entrepreneurs, come pitch to potential investors at the Startup Pitch Competition about how your solution seeks to improve the synergy between the US and Korea. We invite all entrepreneurial-minded American and Korean professionals to attend the IES during UKC 2021 and learn about growing cross-border business opportunities in the US and Korea today.

Keynote Speech @ Closing Session

By Dr. Jong Sung Koh, President and CEO, GENOSCO Inc.

TITLE: An audacious journey from Daedeok Science Town to Boston
(Journey of the Discovery of Lazertinib, an innovative lung cancer drug)

Dr. Jong Sung Koh is a researcher and entrepreneur who founded GENOSCO Inc. and has been its President and CEO since 2008. In the middle of a global economic crisis, he moved to the epicenter of global biomedical innovation to discover a new drug in the post genomic era in 2008. This time, he was not a senior executive of a large pharmaceutical company. Rather, he started a new life as an entrepreneur of a small biotechnology startup in a completely different and foreign surrounding. Over the last 13 years, he discovered Lazertinib, a novel drug approved by the KFDA for the treatment of lung cancer. Lazertinib was valued up to $1.25 billion when it was licensed out to Janssen in 2018. Lazertinib is in phase 3 global trials and believed to have a very high potential to become a global blockbuster drug. At the Closing session of UKC 2021, Dr. Koh presents his journey as an entrepreneur at a biotech startup in the USA and the conviction it has given him over the years. On top of that, he will also share what a science entrepreneur can do and how. He earned his Ph.D. in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1990 after his MS in the Department of Chemistry at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 1981 and BS in the Department of Chemical Education at the Seoul National University in 1979.
